The John A. Lee Memorial Scholarship

Dr. John Lee, an American born in Minnesota, spent years teaching in France, and was a founder of the American Graduate School of International Relations and Diplomacy in 1994 and its President until he passed away in 2000.

Dr. Lee believed in teaching international relations in a new way, bringing together humanistic and global concerns. An inspirational teacher, his legacy to the American Graduate School of International Relations and Diplomacy includes the school's particular focus on the development of the individual student. It is in his memory that this scholarship is awarded.

Award range

The scholarship is granted for one academic year. It ranges from € 1,000 to € 10,000; in some exceptional cases, the scholarship covering the full cost of tuition may be granted.

The scholarship may be renewed for a second year depending on the student's financial situation and academic performance at AGSIRD.

Who qualifies

The John A. Lee Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students of high academic merit who apply to the M.A. program at AGSIRD and are in need of financial help.

Between equally excellent candidates, the Scholarship Committee will favor those who cannot benefit from other forms of student aid.

How to apply

Students wishing to be considered for this scholarship are invited to send their scholarship application along with their application to the school. Two documents must be sent, adressed to the John A. Lee Memorial Scholarship Committee:

  • a letter explaining why the applicant particularly wants to study international relations and why he or she feels they qualify for the scholarship;

  • a statement of the applicant's financial requirements.

The committee will reply within four weeks of receipt of the scholarship application.

If you take advantage of AGS, you can go very far. I am very happy with my decision to go to AGS and soak up Paris as much as two years will allow.
