An American M.A. and a European LL.M in three years

M.A. students at AGSIRD may undertake a double-degree program in international relations and diplomacy and law whereby they can earn two Master's degrees over the course of three years:

  • An American M.A. (Master of Arts) degree in International Relations and Diplomacy.

  • A European LL.M. (Master of Laws) degree in French and European Law.

This double-degree program is offered by AGSIRD in partnership with the Law School at the Université de Cergy-Pontoise (UCP).

Description of the program

M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy

All information about the Masters in International Relations and Diplomacy program can be found here.

LL.M. in International Law

The objective of the LL.M. in International Law program is to provide a strong background in French and European Union Law to professionals preparing to work for or in relation with European corporations or institutions, or international organizations.

Students may choose one of the following LL.M. degrees:

  • LL.M. in French and European Union Law

  • LL.M. in Law and Business Ethics (France, Europe and International)

  • LL.M. in Business and Taxation law (France, Europe and International)

In order to make the choice that best suits their interest and career plans, students are helped by advisors from UCP and AGSIRD.

The program is taught by both academics and lawyers or other professionals. Some seminars are taught by and within international law firms based in Paris.

Through this setting, the program provides its students with contacts among the international legal community in Paris.

In addition to the Optional French language program offered at AGSIRD, students have the opportunity to follow the combined course in French Language and Cultural Projects offered at UCP. This course is specifically designed to allow foreign students to develop their communication skills in French and learn about French culture.

Organization of the program

The program is taught entirely in English both at AGSIRD and at UCP.

Students spend the first two years of the program at AGSIRD and the third year at UCP (30 minutes from Paris).

Students who do not have a legal background are offered four preparatory courses while pursuing their M.A. at AGSIRD:

  • Introduction to the Anglo-American Legal System

  • American Tort Law

  • American Business Law

  • American Criminal Law

While the LL.M. program at UCP is usually open to law students, AGSIRD graduates are automatically accepted into the LL.M. program at UCP if they have fulfilled the two following conditions:

  • Having successfully completed the Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy offered at AGSIRD

  • Having successfully completed the four preparatory courses in American Law offered at AGSIRD as described in the paragraph above.

Note: AGSIRD students who have taken these courses at a recognized institution before entering AGSIRD will not be required to take these preparatory courses.

quote leftAs citizens of the world community, AGSers share a deep will to improve international state of affairs. This drive for change translates into prescriptive discussion between students and teachers, not simply criticism. I most admire this quality about AGS and know that because we have the will to improve the system, we are the way for change.quote right
