Dual Program in International Relations and Diplomacy / French and European Union Law

An American M.A. and a European LL.M. in three years

Thanks to a partnership between AGS and the Law School of Université de Cergy-Pontoise in France, students in the Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy program at AGS may choose a dual degree option whereby they earn two Master's degrees over the course of three years:

  • A U.S.-accredited M.A. (Master of Arts) in International Relations and Diplomacy.

  • A Europe-accredited LL.M. (Master of Laws) in one of three specializations:
French and European Union Law; Law and Business Ethics; French and Taxation Law.

Description of the Dual Program

Students in this dual program complete the full M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy curriculum as well as four preparatory Law courses at AGS during the first two years, and one of the three one-year LL.M. programs at Université de Cergy-Pontoise in the third year.

M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy

All information about the Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy program at AGS can be found here.

LL.M. at Université de Cergy-Pontoise (UCP)

The objective of the LL.M. at UCP is to provide specialized knowledge in certain areas of French, European Union and International Law to students preparing to work for or in relation with Intergovernmental Organizations, NGOs, European institutions, and International Corporations.

Students earn an LL.M. in French and European Union Law with one of two specializations:

  • Law and Business Ethics (France, Europe and International)

  • Business and Taxation law (France, Europe and International)

In order to make the choice that best suits their interest and career objectives, students are helped by advisors from UCP and AGS.

The LL.M. courses are taught by both academics and lawyers or other professionals. Some seminars are taught by and within international law firms based in Paris.

Through this setting, the program provides its students with a network of contacts among the international legal community in Paris.

Students who do not have a legal background are required to take four preparatory courses while pursuing their M.A. at AGS:

  • Introduction to the Anglo-American Legal System

  • American Tort Law

  • American Business Law

  • American Criminal Law

Students who successfully complete the four preparatory courses will be offered a Certificate in Anglo-Saxon Law.

In addition to the Optional French language courses offered at AGS during the first year, students have the opportunity to follow the combined course on French Language and Cultural Projects offered at UCP along with the LL.M. courses in the last year. This optional course is specifically designed to allow foreign students to develop their communication skills in French and learn about French culture.

Organization of the Dual Program

Both parts of the dual program are taught entirely in English, at AGS as well as at UCP.

During the first two years, students take courses at AGS on boulevard Raspail in Paris; in the third year they take courses at UCP, 30 minutes from Paris.

While the LL.M. program at UCP is usually open to law students, AGS graduates are accepted into the LL.M. program at UCP if they have fulfilled the two following conditions:

  • Having successfully completed the Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy program at AGS

  • Having successfully completed the four preparatory courses in Anglo-American Law offered at AGS as described above.

Note: Students who have taken equivalent courses at a recognized institution before attending the program at AGS will not be required to take these preparatory courses.
